Air Vice-Marshal (Ret.), Dr Tracy Smart AO, BMBS, Dip Avmed, MPH, MA, FRACMA, FACASM, FAsMA, FCDSS, FCHSM (Hon), is an Australian aviation medical physician, medical administrator, a retired senior officer in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). She served in a variety of tactical, operational and strategic roles in the RAAF and broader Australian Defence Force (ADF), participated in several overseas deployments, undertook exchange tours with the Royal Air Force (UK) and the United States Air Force, and served as Surgeon General of the ADF from 2015 to 2019.
Dr Smart has undertaken the Australian Defence and Strategic Studies Course and the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. She has authored 14 published articles, a book chapter and over 300 papers for presentation at scientific meetings, in the areas of aviation medicine, aeromedical evacuation, military medicine, diversity, leadership and mental health. AVM Smart is a member of the Australian Football League Mental Health Steering Group and has previously been a member of the Prime Minister’s Advisory Council on Veterans’ Mental Health, the Board of Phoenix Australia Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health, and the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission.
Dr Smart was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2012 Queen’s Birthday Honours List and an Officer of the Order of Australian in the 2019 Queens’ Birthday Honours List. AVM Smart retired from the permanent Air Force in early 2020 and transferred to the RAAF Reserve.
